Kyrie Post Game Presser - “The young guys don’t know what it takes to be a championship level team.
“The young guys don’t know what it takes to be a championship level team. What it takes every day. And if they think it is hard now, what do they think it will be like when we’re trying to get to the Finals?”
“There were no expectations last year. Everyone played free and easy. Everyone surpassed whatever they expected for themselves. This year? We all have high expectations. The players, the coaches, everyone. And that’s good, but we aren’t doing it yet.”
"We can get there. We’ve got to be better. I’ve got to be better. We need to win these games on the road. That’s on me as a leader. I need to be a better leader and to help get us there.”
[–]Timberwolves stripesnstripes 81 points 21 hours ago
Yeah it’s easy. Be on a team with LeBron.
[–]chaelp1 5615 points 22 hours ago
Now he knows how Lebron felt when he came back to Cleveland
[–]Knicks HokageEzio 175 points 22 hours ago
They went to the Finals 3 times though.
[–]chaelp1 938 points 22 hours ago
Because of Lebron. The first season was especially trying because guys like Kyrie, Waiters before the trade, Tristan and Love had never played winning basketball. He spent a few games simply standing in the corner trying to prove a point to Kyrie and Dion that they couldn’t win playing like that
[–]regret_or_discipline 81 points 20 hours ago
Can you link the games he stood in the corner? I wanna lulz
[–]94savage 446 points 20 hours ago*
Lebron did it a couple of times but there was a early season 2014 game @ Portland. Kyrie just had a game with 34 points, 0 assists @ the Jazz . He felt Kyrie was playing too much 1v1 vs Lillard so he stood in the corner most of the game. it stands out to me because he admitted later he did it on purpose to teach a lesson. Cavs got blown out by 30
[–]Timberwolves 127crazie 352 points 19 hours ago
Bron’s such a baller lol
[–]Warriors Otherwise_Window 50 points 20 hours ago
Without LeBron they didn't get to the playoffs. IN THE EAST.
[–]Mavericks LickMyDoncic 350 points 20 hours ago
How many finals appearances.. wait no let me start again. How many playoff appearances did Kyrie lead them to before LeBron came back?
Wait no let me start again. How many 50 40 30 win seasons did he lead them to? One. He lead them to one season of winning 33 games before LeBron came back. LeBron won more games than that in his rookie year.
These cats aren't on the same level. Kyrie would never have ascended to having 'what it takes' to be a champion without LeBron.
I know he ran away from Cleveland so he would stop hearing that, but it ain't gonna happen because it's the truth.
[–][CLE] Shaquille O'NealI pwnurface 271 points 19 hours ago
Thats the point though. Kyrie thinks hes on the same level as bron. When in reality, bron was at kyries peak in his rookie year.
[–]Rockets fourchainz__ 4560 points 20 hours ago
We all eventually turn into our parents
[–]cody wankennobi 31 points 19 hours ago
Indeed, and LeBron is a lot of people's dad.
[–][GSW] Andris Biedrins AbstrActivities 197 points 15 hours ago
My belief is that flaws in parenting skips a generation a lot of times. Dad was neglected so he becomes overbearing with his own kid, and his own kid goes the opposite direction because he couldn't stand the helicopter parenting and now we're back at square one.
[–]Psychic_rock 69 points 13 hours ago
That certainly aligns with my general beleif that everything’s a circle.
[–]fuckin_wot_m8 163 points 12 hours ago
Kyrie would disagree.
[–][IND] Paul George watdapau 457 points 21 hours ago
Kyrie saw himself before lebron went back to the cavs. He was describing himself
[–]Warriors Otherwise_Window 15 points 20 hours ago
the difference is that LeBron actually has and had a proven track record of making a team better
[–]ginger_banks 92 points 19 hours ago
Kyrie isn't Lebron though. Lebron is a professional at carrying teams to the biggest stage. Kyrie's team made it to the conference finals without him.
[–]Cavaliers RCM88x 257 points 19 hours ago
The difference was that Cavs team was coming off a lottery pick season while the Celtics are coming off of B2B ECF.
Infact these "young guys" certainly do know what it takes to be a championship team, they were basically one win away from an EC title just last season.
[–]Heat AidsAcrossAmerica 126 points 17 hours ago
And that was WITHOUT Kyrie and Hayward.
[–]username--_-- 22 points 12 hours ago
Hayward is playing like a mediocre role player and the readdition of Kyrie really just seems to have reduced what everyone else was doing before.
Maybe this season will just be a gel and chemistry season and next season is where they truly make their mark
[–][CLE] Kevin Love rompskee 660 points 23 hours ago
Something something “just wait until Kyrie and Hayward come back, this team is going to be unstoppable!”
[–]Celtics NatrolleonBonaparte 371 points 22 hours ago
Was a totally reasonable prediction if you watched how the team played without them last year
[–]Raptors mantistobogganmMD 23 points 23 hours ago
If Celtics shit the bed in the playoffs is Irving leaving a serious possibility?
[–]yanansawelder 40 points 22 hours ago
Maybe should've just stayed in Cleveland with Bron
[–]Raptors AprilsMostAmazing 20 points 21 hours ago
he can just join Lebron in LA this offseason
[–]Warriors ArtfulLying 22 points 20 hours ago
If that happened, I’d feel so bad for Cavs fans lol
[–][CLE] Matthew Dellavedova RetMaestro 22 points 19 hours ago
everything is fine, we just to have to tank for Zion, everything is fine
[–]0110nets 67 points 23 hours ago
So teach them. You've been there over a year
[–]Timberwolves revohitta 880 points 22 hours ago
What's going on with the celtics fam?
[–]Celtics MarcusNotSmart 1698 points 22 hours ago
Tatum is overrated as hell.
Brown is playing injured and is also not a good offensive player at all.
Hayward's injury took 75% of his talent away.
Horford is old.
If Morris wasn't having a miracle season we would be like a .500 team.
[–]Hawks fruliojoman 1164 points 22 hours ago
Yeah Brown and Tatum suck, in fact since we're so nice we'll take one of them off your hands and give you the exciting and cool and young Taurean Prince
[–]Knicks Broken_Seesaw 30 points 14 hours ago
Hey Celtics, have you seen Emmanual Mudiay's breakout season?
[–]Raptors AprilsMostAmazing 37 points 20 hours ago
i'll give you 3point sometimes shooter CJ Miles for Tatum
[–][PHI] T.J. McConnell Hesi_Pull-up_Timbo 91 points 21 hours ago
Saw a Celts fan saying Tatum is better than Embiid.
[–]ghhgb 72 points 17 hours ago
I saw Philly fan saying Simmons is better than Kyrie. What's your point?
[–]Mavericks LiftBodyUpThenDown 43 points 17 hours ago
His point is that people have to agree with the consensus opinions or they deserve to be mocked
[–][BOS] Shaquille O'Neal gda19 108 points 22 hours ago*
Brown has been better than Tatum the past month and half. I suspect he’s better than Tatum overall when he’s not injured
[–]RANDY FLOSS 387 points 23 hours ago
If I'm Jay Tatum and Jaylen Brown, I'm like, probably gonna not like Kyrie much.
[–]oakled 210 points 23 hours ago
If I’m a young guy I’m thinking “we were nearly a Finals team last year when you weren’t here”.
[–]Raptors JasonH0711 144 points 23 hours ago
If they don’t like him now they gonna detest him when they get shipped to NO this off-season
[–]Kings dontcallbymethat 407 points 23 hours ago
They went to game 7 in the ECF without Kyrie and Hayward. I can definitely see them taking some issue with this.
[–]Celtics HorsNoises 108 points 22 hours ago
They're also 20 and 21 years old and haven't been to 3 straight Finals. I'm pretty sure they're smart enough dudes to know that this is Kyrie's team and they aren't playing to their full potential. Y'all aren't giving them enough credit.
[–][CHI] Derrick Rose shotrob 190 points 21 hours ago
they also have never had LeBron on their team to carry them
[–][TOR] DeMar DeRozan fin_to_fin 141 points 23 hours ago
Never really picture Kyrie as a leader. He says he is but I dont get it and that's probably what they are lacking.
[–]Raptors AmbitiousSingh 32 points 21 hours ago
You know what they say, fake it till you make it. Say it often enough, and people might even start thinking he's a leader.
[–]KnowledgeNate 21 points 19 hours ago
Kyrie is not a lead dog. He thought he was because he's young and immature and hit a big shot to win the chip. Everybody wants to be the lead dog until they realize they're not. Kyrie is going through that realization right now. Publicly blaming the inexperience of your young players? Yeah, like that won't create massive resentment amongst the corps. Dude seems totally exasperated -- not a good look for a "leader."
[–]NBA RareSir 249 points 23 hours ago
It isn’t easy being the leader huh
[–]Clippers meteor_jam32 878 points 22 hours ago
They need to listen to him. He knows what he's talking about.
[–]Celtics troydotraw 260 points 23 hours ago
I love him and agree with everything
[–]Nosalis2 47 points 23 hours ago
He needs to do a Harden & go for 40 every night. This team is trash offensively outside him.
[–]Celtics troydotraw 28 points 23 hours ago
I agree 100%. He has the talent to do so as well. But Brad loves the idea of a team where everybody eats. And a team like that hasn’t won a chip in a while
[–]Bucks vkytdjtfgkj 720 points 22 hours ago*
I really don't see anything wrong with what he said.
These young guys don't have the experience. Playing with expecations is harder. I need to be a better leader.
Seems like pretty typical #1 guy quotes. Kobe used to say shit like this every day.
[–]Knicks Driveshaft48 432 points 21 hours ago*
The difference is everyone knew Kobe was the Lakers and they'd be nothing without him.... The Celtics were literally one game away from the finals last year without Kyrie.... You don't think think a part of Tatum or Brown finds all this leader talk a little agitating?
[–]Warriors YellowBaboon 98 points 21 hours ago
That was a really weak east though and Horford was the main reason they did well.
[–]Knicks Driveshaft48 73 points 21 hours ago
I agree but tell that to Tatum
[–][LAL] Caron Butler TheDarkKnightAdvises 133 points 21 hours ago
Tatum and brown don’t have the same amount of experience as kyrie does. Kyrie is the star of the team, and that celtics team did very well last year but I don’t think they’d be as good this year without kyrie, who’s carried them through quite a few games. If Tatum and brown have a problem, they should start playing a little better and prove themselves first.
